Just get used to the prices
Through the first 20 years of 2000, we got used to cheap airline fairs. Post-pandemic the prices are much higher and the sneaky fees have even turned up at airlines that would swear they would never do that.
We were pampered with low fares and half-empty planes. I remember the days when you could get upgraded to first class just by asking. But that’s gone. It seems that it’s time to settle into a new world of airline travel.
This new world is a world of sneaky fees and smaller seats. I have been used to flying economy most of my life. I’m used to being packed in like sardines and getting that surprise seatmate. Most have been good, a few have been nightmares.
But I know that part of the trade-off in a cheap fare is being uncomfortable. I’d rather spend money at my destination than on getting there. Most of the times, I feel that I’m going to be sore and tired no matter how spacious my airline seat is.
The rube fees is that airlines use them to make the airfare look lower. And to be honest, if you are just wanting to get away, and travel light, it makes no sense to have to pay extra for services you aren’t going to use. I get it.
I still am in the habit of upgrading the ticket price from the bare-bones economy fare. I do it mostly because it gives you the option to change dates if something comes up. Those super-cheap fares are usually no refund or changes. And if you do change them, then the cost to change is half or more of the cost of the ticket.
The problem with the Ala cart pricing is people. Some folks still expect to get the same service and carry-on allowance. At the same time, they also seem to get the folks that are trying to bend the rules to get as much on the plane as they can. They might think they are being smart or cleaver. But really they are just making the travel experience worse for the rest of us.
Please stop doing it people.
